You can protect your hot glue from getting everywhere, by placing newspaper or an old tablecloth on top of your work surface. Use hot glue to make a small hole in the glue stick. Plug the gun in to heat the glue.
As a work surface cover, a silicone mat is a great choice. However, cardboard, parchment paper or even tin foil can be used as cost-effective alternatives.
