Craigslist sale goes awry: Two people arrested

Nico Roesler Santa Fe police arrested a man who they said pretended to be a cell phone dealer on Craigslist, and stole money from an Albuquerque resident.

David Peterson, Albuquerque’s victim, was seen standing outside Party City at 528 W. Cordova Road around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. He had just agreed to purchase a Craigslist cell phone from a private seller. The victim carried $160 in his shirt pocket and was ready to pay for the phone.

According to Capt. Aric Wheeler, Santa Fe police.

Police said that Cortez, 37 years old, had no address but was the one who posted the advertisement. However, Cortez assumed the seller’s role. Wheeler stated that the suspect had taken advantage of the introduction.

Cortez is accused of “violently grabbing the white pants victim’s money from his shirt pocket”.

Peterson fought back and Cortez took the money from his pocket. Cortez then fled with two $20 bills. Peterson stated that Cortez left in a white Mercury Cougar 1995.

This description was consistent with the car police pulled over on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. Cortez, after being given his Miranda rights, told police that he once reached up to take forty dollars from the victim’s shirt pocket.
